Section 1: App Setup

Monica MacDonald -

Most of the app setup for Apple Watch is done from your iPhone but there are still a few setup options that we recommend you go through before you start using the app.

The “MORE” tab contains general information that will help you get started.

For instance, it is very important to note that Apple Watch only allows one active workout session at a time.  This means that it is not possible to track your workout with two apps simultaneously.

1.1 Membership

You can double check that you have a pro membership or if you’re using the trial version by tapping on the “MEMBERSHIP” option.

NOTE: If you’ve purchased a pro membership and it says that you still have the trial version on Apple Watch, it’s most likely because you need to sync your settings from iPhone to Apple Watch.

To sync a MotiFIT app setting change from iPhone to Apple Watch, please follow these simple steps.

On Apple Watch

  1. Open the MotiFIT app.
  2. Tap on the “MORE” button.
  3. Tap on the arrow to go back to the home screen.
  4. Wait for approximately 15 seconds with the screen active (without turning black)

NOTE: Having your phone close to your watch will help this process.

1.2 Permissions

The “PERMISSIONS” option reminds you that MotiFIT requires that you grant it permission to read your heart rate within the health app on your iPhone.

  1. Open MotiFIT on your iPhone.
  2. Open Health app.
  3. Tap on the “SOURCES” tab.
  4. Tap on “MOTIFIT”.
  5. Ensure that MotiFIT has access to “READ / WRITE” the active energy, heart rate and workouts.

NOTE: A restart of both the iPhone and Apple Watch is sometimes required to allow the permissions to be sent from iPhone to Apple Watch.

1.3 Review Workout

A glance view can be enabled in the iPhone’s Apple Watch management app to view your last workout stats directly on Apple Watch.

NOTE: Only workouts done with the MotiFIT apps on Apple Watch can be seen in your glances.  Workouts tracked with the iPhone apps will not appear in the glances.

After you have saved a workout done on Apple Watch, a copy should be sent to your phone to be saved in the MotiFIT database.  However, it is sometimes possible that the iPhone does not recognize the saved workout.

NOTE:  If a workout does not automatically sync to your phone, please try the following.

  1. Lock and unlock your iPhone.
  2. Open MotiFIT on your iPhone.
  3. Tap on the “WORKOUTS” tab.
  4. Pull down to refresh the workout list.

1.4 Operation Modes

MotiFIT on Apple Watch has two basic modes of operation (ACTIVE WATCH MODE and PASSIVE WATCH MODE).

1.4.1 Active Watch Mode

MotiFIT enters “ACTIVE WATCH MODE” when the workout is started directly on Apple Watch.  In this mode, MotiFIT runs natively on Apple Watch and no connection to the host iPhone is required. The heart rate is read directly from the watch sensor.

OPTIONAL: It is possible to pair an external Bluetooth heart rate monitor (Polar H7, Wahoo TICKR or Scosche Rhythm+) directly with Apple Watch.  It is recommended to turn off your iPhone's Bluetooth radio and then go to SETTINGS > BLUETOOTH on Apple Watch in order to pair the Bluetooth heart rate sensor with Apple Watch.

1.4.2 Passive Watch Mode

MotiFIT enters “PASSIVE WATCH MODE” when the workout is started on the iPhone.  In this mode, an external Bluetooth heart rate monitor like a Polar H7, Wahoo TICKR or Scosche Rhythm+ needs to be paired with your iPhone to provide MotiFIT with heart rate samples.

Apple Watch simply mirrors the information gathered by MotiFIT running on your iPhone in this mode.

1.5 Keeping Your App Active

Apple Watch automatically turns off its screen to conserve battery power.  Therefore, it's not possible to keep the screen on for the full duration of your workout.

The screen will turn on whenever it detects that you raise your wrist or when you tap the screen or one of the buttons.

When the screen turns on, if you have an active workout session it will automatically display the MotiFIT app.

TIP:  Double tapping the digital crown, will reopen MotiFIT if you happen to exit out of it accidentally.

You can delay the automatic turn off of the screen from 15 seconds to 70 seconds.

On Apple Watch:

  1. Tap on the "SETTINGS" icon.
  2. On the "SETTINGS" screen, tap "GENERAL".
  3. Tap "WAKE SCREEN" on the "GENERAL" screen.
  4. Tap on "70 SECONDS" under "ON TAP".

On iPhone:

  1. Open the iPhone’s Apple Watch management app.
  2. Tap on "GENERAL" under the "MY WATCH" tab.
  3. Tap "WAKE SCREEN".
  4. Tap on "70 SECONDS" under "ON TAP".

If desired, you can also force Apple Watch to display the previously used app instead of the watch face.

On Apple Watch:

  1. Tap on the "SETTINGS" icon.
  2. On the "SETTINGS" screen, tap "GENERAL".
  3. Tap "WAKE SREEN" on the "GENERAL" screen.
  4. Tap on "PREVIOUS ACTIVITY" under "RESUME TO".

 On iPhone:

  1. Open the iPhone’s Apple Watch management app.
  2. Tap on "GENERAL"” under the "MY WATCH" tab.
  3. Tap "WAKE SCREEN".
  4. Ensure that the "WAKE SCREEN ON WRIST RAISE" option is turned on.

NOTE: Changing the setting on your phone will change it on Apple Watch and vice versa.

1.6 Calibrating Your Apple Watch

It is possible to measure your workout metrics without a connection to your iPhone when the app is started in “ACTIVE MODE”.  There are several things that you can do to improve the accuracy of these readings.

First, you can calibrate your Apple Watch to improve distance and speed / pace measurements.

  1. Bring your iPhone and Apple Watch to a flat, open, outdoor area that offers good GPS reception and clear skies.
  2. Check that Location Services is turned on.  On your iPhone, tap Settings > Privacy > Location Services.
  3. Check that Motion Calibration & Distance is turned on.  On your iPhone, tap Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services.
  4. Hold your iPhone in your hand, or wear it on an armband (preferably) or waistband.
  5. Open the Workout app on your Apple Watch, and choose Outdoor Walk or Outdoor Run.
  6. Choose your goal or select Open.  Tap Start.
  7. Walk or run at your normal pace for about 20 minutes.

You can also update your personal information since this general information is used to calculate some of the workout metrics, burned calories for example.

  1. Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap the “MY WATCH” tab.
  3. Tap “HEALTH” > “EDIT”.
  4. Tap the item that you want to change and adjust it.
  5. Tap “DONE”.

1.7 Debug Logs

If you are experiencing problems with the app, you might have to send your debug logs to our support team.

To do so, you must first check that your debug logs are enabled in your phone.  Then, you want to try to reproduce the problem while the debug logs are on.  Once you have captured the issue, send the debug logs to your phone by tapping on “SEND TO IPHONE”.

Logs will then be sent to MotiFIT on your iPhone where you will then be able to send them to support via the “MORE” tab under “SEND DEBUG LOGS”.

For more information on debug logs, please refer to our “IPHONE/IPAD APP USER GUIDE
